Drive times, departure-board style
Pick the area you are leaving from. Every row is a route estimate from that area’s centre point to a fixed destination, with no traffic, rounded to the nearest five minutes. Rush hour toward Atlanta will be longer.

OSRM route estimates on OpenStreetMap roads, no traffic, signals or time of day; rounded to 5 minutes. Origins are the area centre points in our area guides; destinations are fixed points (the airport is its centroid, not a terminal). OSRM (Open Source Routing Machine), requested 2026-10-19
How these estimates are made
Each figure comes from the open-source OSRM router, run on OpenStreetMap road data from a fixed point in each area to a fixed point at each destination. OSRM assumes free-flowing roads. It does not know about traffic, school zones, signals, crashes, construction or the time of day you leave, so a real trip will usually take longer and sometimes much longer.
The destination points are fixed too. The airport estimate runs to the airport grounds, not a terminal or a parking deck, and downtown Gainesville means Gainesville City Hall. Your real starting point inside an area can add or save several minutes.
Use the board to compare areas with each other, not to plan a meeting. For your own commute, run the route in a traffic-aware map at the hour you would actually drive, on a weekday, a few times.
Why we do not quote miles to Atlanta
Published distance claims for Flowery Branch disagree with each other, and none of them tells you how long the drive takes.
The City describes Flowery Branch as being on Lake Lanier and just over forty miles from Atlanta. It puts Old Town 12 miles from downtown Gainesville's medical facilities. (City of Flowery Branch, checked 2026-10-19)
A route estimate is more useful. From the historic downtown, Midtown Atlanta is about 50 minutes with no traffic (OSRM estimate) and the airport about 70 minutes with no traffic (OSRM estimate). From Chestnut Mountain, the airport is about 80 minutes with no traffic (OSRM estimate).
The interstate: I-985 Exit 12
I-985 is the interstate through Flowery Branch. The Spout Springs Road exit is the one the City and the school district use in their own directions.
I-985 Exit 12 is the Spout Springs Road exit. The City's directions to Bay Park take Exit 12 and go west toward Lake Lanier on Phil Niekro Blvd. (City of Flowery Branch, checked 2026-10-19)
That is why the Spout Springs corridor and the downtown score well for interstate trips: from the Spout Springs area, downtown Gainesville and the Mall of Georgia are each about 15 minutes with no traffic (OSRM estimate).
Spout Springs Road is being widened
If you are looking along Spout Springs Road, the drive in a few years may look different from the drive today, and the work in between can slow it down.
Hall County and GDOT are widening Spout Springs Road to four lanes with a raised median, turn lanes and pedestrian facilities. Phase I (Hog Mountain Road to Union Circle) is complete and open. For Phase II (Union Circle to south of Thompson Mill Road), right-of-way purchases started in fall 2023 and are expected to finish by summer 2027, and construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2027. (Hall County, checked 2026-10-19)
Buyers near the second phase should look at the county’s project map for right-of-way and construction effects on a specific lot. Schedules are the county’s and can slip.
Reading the board by area
- Chestnut Mountain is the closest of the five to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton, about 10 minutes with no traffic (OSRM estimate), and the farthest from Atlanta.
- Sterling on the Lake sits toward Braselton too: the Braselton hospital is about 15 minutes with no traffic (OSRM estimate).
- The Lake Lanier side trades interstate time for the lake: downtown Gainesville and the Mall of Georgia are each about 20 minutes with no traffic (OSRM estimate).
- The historic downtown and Spout Springs Road are closest to I-985 and post the shortest Atlanta estimates of the five.
Compare the areas themselves on the neighborhood comparison, or let the area finder weigh commute against the lake, HOAs and sewer.
